Most people don't turn the game into a full time job. Yeah, because most people want to be able to play casually and just mess around on Ascension 0 and make a ridiculous deck. The main point of my post though, is that "just play a lower difficulty" is never going to be a good for people who don't like the balance on the highest difficulty, based on what I've observed of this community. Maybe that's a bold claim, but I'm pretty sure there are many 50% A15 strategies that do not reach 95% performance on A0, and if you've never practiced A0, you won't necessarily realize this. What happens is people discount many A0 strategies because they don't work as well on A15, and suddenly people who have valid opinions about the game on lower difficulties are ignored specifically because they don't play the highest available difficulty.Īlso, I think there are quite a few people who beat A15 50% of the time but can't actually beat A0 95% of the time. It's not hard to imagine some strategies that win ~100% of the time on A0 but only 40% on A15, and others that win ~98% of the time on A0 but 85% on A15. The optimal strategies are different on A0 and A15. And most people care about more than "interesting decisions" during their winstreaks, I think. And if people are playing on that difficulty, there will be natural interest in "winstreaking" on that difficulty. You can tell people to just play whatever difficulty they want, but at the end of the day, there is going to be community pressure to play at the highest possible difficulty, and balance around that difficulty. Now, it feels like you can barely have discussions about the balance of the game without referring to A15. Optimal strategies outside of Ascension stopped mattering to people, regardless of whether they are different from optimal strategies in Ascension. The devs stopped at A15 to work on other stuff, when people seemed happy with its level of difficultly for the time being. "I hope we can make at least Ascension 30 with >5% of players still beating it" -caseyyano on Discord, in JanuaryĪnyway, what actually happened was that every vocal member of the community started playing almost exclusively the highest level of Ascension, the moment they unlocked it. Winstreaking the top Ascension level was basically out of the picture altogether in terms of what I thought the devs had in mind, but these are discussions from January, and it's hard to really get quotes that give all of the context. They were envisioning something like 20-30 levels, with only a small fraction of players even beating the highest difficulty once. Please hide all spoilers by wrapping the text like >!this!<.īack when Ascension mode first came out, from discussions with the devs, it was clear to me that it was not meant as something that was supposed to be consistently winnable.
